Test Apple Watch outdoor/indoor cycling workout with an e-bicycle

Everything started because it came into my mind a question and I was not able to found the answer on internet, so I decided to find it myself doing some tests.

My question was this one:
"Hello everyone,
If I do a cycling outdoor workout with an electric bicycle (who helps you a little bit when you want) should I start a regular outdoor cycling workout or should I choose Indoor Cycling workout to have the most accurate counting of calories burned?
Many thanks"

I chose the same 4,6K climb path (without descents) / 259m (elevation gain)
I used my BH Xenion 27 Lite (electric bicycle) / 20,9Kg.
I did the test 3 times:

  1. with NO electric help and with cycling OUTDOOR training apple watch workout
  2. with TOUR* electric help and with cycling OUTDOOR training apple watch workout
  3. with TOUR* electric help and with cycling INDOOR training apple watch workout
*my bike offers 5 types of electric help assistance: ECO/TOUR/SPORT/TURBO (from min to max help) but always you must pedal.

Here are the results:
  1. Total time: 27:09 / 135 BPM (avge) / 244 ACTIVE CAL burned / PE** 4
  2. Total time: 13:25 / 128 BPM (avge) / 267 ACTIVE CAL burned / PE** 2,5
  3. Total time: 14:51 / 123 BPM (avge) / 133 ACTIVE CAL burned / PE **2,5
**PE = perception of effort (from min 1 to max 5)

So my conclusion is Apple Watch cannot distinguish when you're using a regular bicycle or an electric one, so if you do an outdoor cycling training with an e-bicycle I would recommend to use indoor training method.
